Data Scam: Data Packages From Nigerian Internet Service Providers Is Like Scam To Me

Today on schoolnaija, i want to talk about popular Nigerian internet service providers and the things they do to their subscribers. This is a rant because i have in countless times been duped by these service providers.

As you know, In Nigeria, there are many internet service providers but on this post, i will talk about 4 most popular ones.

Among the popular internet service providers in Nigeria are MTN, Globacom, Airtel and 9Mobile. Now i am going to talk about my beef with these service providers and how it affects other users too.

MTN

MTN is a South African Owned Telecoms company currently having a larger Share of the country's telecoms market. The company has a lot of services that actually impress subscribers among which includes Exciting tariff Plans,Internet Packages and other value added services.

Talking about Internet Packages offered by MTN, i recently bought a data Plan with N500 hoping to use same on my mobile phone for a couple of days (7 Days). Now the very moment i switched on the internet service on my phone, i got an sms that i have just 400MB left of the 1000MB Allocated to me.

This was not only saddening, i felt used. I felt used because i loved the services offered by MTN. Their internet service is fast with speed over 10MBPS. I was proud to write about MTN Services here even though they know nothing about me.

I Agree MTN Has the best tariff plans especially MTN Xtrapro but when it comes to data plans, MTN robs its subscribers a lot. When you buy MTN Data, you'll disover that the rate of dissipation is terribly fast. Sometimes i begin to feel like they allocate Ghost data to subscribers.

This happens to others too and believe me, it leaves us no choice other than seek solution elsewhere. This is one reason why you notice some subscribers just abandon their sim cards for a few months.

That's about MTN. Now i am going to talk about the other telecoms company too.

Globacom

Glo has been my best service provider in terms of Data services. I simply bought my glo Sim because of their amazing Data Plans which are not only reliable but retains for a long time. My love for Glo data services began in 2015 when i just learnt a new internet skill that required me to work from home. Sometimes i am required to communicate with my clients via skype or Teamviewer. So i stayed glued to Globacom internet services.

After a while, i got admission into one of the higher institutions in  Nigerian to pursue a 2 years Higher Diploma Program. This was in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government, Delta State, Nigeria. The very first year was awesome since i had Glo all time. Early 2017, Glo network was interrupted for some community disputes between Glo and the community heads. Network Mast was shutdown for over 5 months. I lost a total of 7000MB and a lot of cash too since i'd just bought a data plan days before the shutdown.

At this time, i quickly took out some cash and subscribe to data plans from other service providers. It took a lot of text messages (Text messages pleading that i reconnect my some) for me to reconnect and begin to buy their data again.

After a couple of months, service was restored, but service was never the same again. Now i am back to my town, Warri, i insert My Glo Sim with a lot of data on my moderm and look. i can't even get 200KBPS. Now i buy Glo data, it sits there for weeks without being used because its either too slow or unable to connect at all.

Little wonder Glo received a lot of negative rating from subscribers on their recent facebook review survey.

I know i am not the only one having this issue.

Airtel

Not really a fan of airtel, but people around me have the same complain. something like a combination of MTN and Globacom issues.

9mobile

Etisalat was the former name. 9mobile has a nice Data service. Its assumed the fasted with speed exceeding 12MB/S. But the thing with 9Mobile is that their data is highly magical. You dey look am e dey go.

That's how my subscription got exhausted within 10 minutes. That day i actually wanted to download  a file of 200MB From FileHippo.com. All i know was that i had over 1000MB allocated to me but i later realized its all ghost when i got an alert notifying me my data was exhausted after 10 minutes. I Felt like breaking my sim or throwing it into fire or something.

Conclusion: Asides Glo, all other internet service providers in Nigeria are good. Glo is also good for those living in areas with a better coverage. But my issue with them is that they're not after the gains of their subscribers but their own gain. This is selfish.

If You allocate 1000MB data volume to a subscriber, make sure he gets the value for it. Do not by way of making more profit for yourself reduce the volume or Make it a ghost data.

Do not cut their data in order to have them buy again.

always ensure your Masts are in good order and ensure there is not interruption as a result of disputes.

Some of the Agents or Monitoring team assigned to  Refuel and maintain your masts are thieves. They simply put on the Masts when they feel like it thereby saving gas for themselves at the detriment of the subscribers and your company reputation.
