Featured: The Best Headies Review By Ogbeni La

The Headies has come and gone leaving a sour taste on the tongues of many music lovers. In the history of the award ceremony this year's edition has the unfortunateness of going down as the most disappointing making the infamous 2015 edition look like a learner.
.
Technical hitches were glaring from the scratch. In Broadcast, there's what we call "Dead air". Off air is when the station is not on, in Dead air situation, the station is on but nothing is heard at home. Welcome to Headies Dead Air.
.
There were flashes of genius here and there in the beginning. All through the event the optimism that the show would finally hit up right crescendo never left.
.
It is difficult to hazard a guess on why Falz and the co-host showed up late. Whatever it is, it was the very first pointer to a disappointing night. Shoddy arrangement.
.
The first five awards were called without the winners showing up to receive their plaques. Wait for this--they didn't even send anyone to collect on their behalf! It was like a grand conspiracy. Everybody trying to show they don't care for a Headies. I thought we all care for a head.
.
As if in tribute to the day of the week the ceremony was organized, old artistes like The Remedies, Jazzman Olofin and Daddy Showkey were thrown in our face to remind us of the crap we thought was music before exposure bailed us. Oya! Eyan Throwback Thursday! Thankfully the performances came at a time some people were already contemplating switching off their TVs and conserving the fuel in their small generators. It was a relief. It should have come before the first batches of award presentation.
.
Olamide seemed to have taken his pound of flesh from the organisers after last year's face off with Don Jazzy. He wasn't seen hundred feet near Eko suites the venue of the event. I expect a Cold War after this. I shall be watching Hip TV to take record of how often his songs would be played henceforth. And to think that that betrayal of a Mavins Record Label also didn't turn up. Where's the solidarity?
.
Life happened when Kiss Daniel won three almost deserved awards while the two pretenders he lost the Next Rated category to last year weren't even considered nomination-worthy. What better way to know that the Next Rated category has become a sham?
.
If we still had doubts, the organisers helped us cleared it when the winner of this year's Next Rated emerged. Mr Eazi.

Mr Eazi sings like one sky-high fucker with a lot of money to throw around and enough talent to confuse a competent producer. You can't measure how talented he is. Not in five months and two singles. But Headies rated him to become the next big thing to happen to the Music Industry? That was it. Half of the viewers at home switched off their television at this point. They couldn't contain the embarrassment such inappropriateness was causing them.
.
The camera zoomed on Humblesmith after the announcement and I could read his mind. He wanted to lose to someone he'd be proud of. But this? If he had a mask, he'd gladly punch Ayo Animashaun in the nose.
.
If we find a Mr Eazi a la mode laid back song appealing and winsome, Koker was a better bet. Eazi is still smelling of Ghana and he's already been gifted one of the two most prestigious awards in the Nigeria Entertainment Industry. It will take a miracle to avoid a worse edition next year. The Next Rated category is not where you want to mess up. Ycee had enough plenty sense not to show up. And Teckno, plentier sense to even snub the category way before the D-day.
.
Wizkid won the most important award of the night abi morning. Artiste of the Year. He is now a legend. Argue with your Headiesless shelf. He is the second artiste after Wande Coal to go from a Next Rated to winning the Artiste of the Year. That deserves an applause. A true test of talent. He did it without a single to his credit in the year under review. I don't even know if I'm being sarcastic there. And yes, his influence on the emergence of Mr Eazi as this year's Next Rated is there to see. Connect the dots.
.
Simi humbled Yemi Alade despite the latter's amazing year. I love Simi but I knew something was amiss when Headies decided to rather put Tiwa ahead of her in the Artiste of the Year nominees. Yemi's year was like orgasm. Awesome by every stretch.
WizKid snubs Eva's eager boyfriend to give us something to talk about for a time to come.
.
Falz the badt guy compered without blemish and got two deserved plaques to crown a fine night.
.
And Illbliss gets Rap artiste of the Year plus lyrics on the roll. It won't make him better than Mode 9 who like Channels TV keeps retaining the category until now but it will encourage upcoming rappers.
.
The only decisions that weren't contentious at the Headies this year for me is Darey's haul, Fada fada winning the song of the year and Laolu Akins'induction into the Headies Hall of Fame. And few others that do not come to mind readily.
.
I think my head aches already. It won't be a bad to win a Headies too but as I have no music talent, I'll just settle for a head.
